Richard MERIC

Lead and Carbon Pencil Drawings :: 1978-1983

At the beginning, simple exercises, then gradually the response to inspired impulses, these drawings of which some are far from technical perfection, carry in them the first steps of the various currents which forged Richard Meric's artworks creation realised later as oils on canvas.

    Artist Insight:

"Original oeuvre created in homage to Salvador Dali in reference to a vision of the Master of Surrealism: in the Thirties, at the time of a voyage in Africa, André Breton sends to Dali a postcard in black and white representing an indigenous village. Holding the card in the wrong way, Dali sees there appearing a "hidden" face that it transcribes and draws. Using again the same principle with the portrait of the Master, and strongly inspired at that time by The Lord of Rings by Tolkien, Richard MERIC created this drawing using the paranoia-critical method."

    Artist Insight:

"Realised in 1980 in a small cabin in south France, with the help of sister Maria Juwanita. This picture is now world-wide famous and considered by many people like one of the most interesting drawings of the 20th century.

Various interpretations of a single portrait of Belá Bartók are placed four times in four directions inside a perfect circle. Four times the same face, keeping the same expression, in an upside-down geometrical world, showing another inside dimension with appearances of Dali and M.C. Escher, hidden pictures and more surprises able to turn your mind upside-down!

The only model used is a portrait of B.Bartok (shown at the end of the video), reproduced 4 times in 4 directions, constitueing a closed universe integrated in a perfect circle built on the Golden Ratio (by Fibonacci)." The Artist applied Salvador Dali's "paranoïa-critic" method, that consists in reaching a perception level that allow to interpret the shapes drawn by the lights and shadows in the face and turn them into new elements, characters, animals, objects.

    Artist Insight:

"According to the principle of the double image, Richard MERIC interpreted the play of light and shadow to create various characters and scenes, in the face and in the bust of the psychoanalist. The reading of the drawing can be done in the 4 directions, on different levels. This is a unique artwork, because of the many levels of image nesting.

The artwork is a pre-drawing used for the realisation of the oil painting on canvas entitled 'An early dream of Sigmund Freud'"

    Artist Insight:

"Commission work realized for a publisher gathering the vision of various international artists and designers on the person and work of Hugo Pratt, who saw this drawing and strongly appreciated it which completely confuses his face with his emblematic characters. The various parts of the face of Pratt and Corto come from the left side of the drawing and gradually gather to compose the final image."
